President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Maiduguri Airport to international status, completing the establishment of at least one international airport in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones

This move is expected to enhance economic activities, boost trade, and improve regional connectivity in the Northeast.
The announcement was made by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications. According to him, the decision aligns with Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector and fostering economic development. “This strategic move ensures that all six geopolitical zones in the country have at least one international airport, which will boost trade, tourism, and access to global markets,” Dare said.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has long been a commercial center in the region, but its airport has mainly handled domestic flights. With this upgrade, the airport is expected to undergo infrastructural improvements, enhanced security measures, and operational upgrades to meet international standards.
The decision is also seen as a crucial step toward revitalizing economic activities in the Northeast, a region that has faced significant challenges due to insurgency and underdevelopment. The upgraded airport is expected to facilitate easier travel for businesspeople, investors, and humanitarian organizations, further contributing to the region’s recovery and growth.
