President Bola Tinubu has imposed a six-month ban on the export of raw shea nuts, effective immediately
The move aims to curb informal trade, boost local processing, and increase the value derived from Nigeria’s shea industry. The government expects the policy to stabilize the sector and generate significant revenue in the short term.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, confirmed the ban during a briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, noting that it aligns with strategies adopted by other West African countries to strengthen domestic processing and create jobs within the shea value chain.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is overseeing a stakeholder meeting to ensure effective implementation of the ban. The government is also exploring ways to support local processors and further develop the shea industry during this period.
The policy underscores Nigeria’s commitment to adding value to its agricultural exports and promoting sustainable economic growth in the sector.
