There were strong indications on Tuesday that President Bola Tinubu met with the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during his working visit to Europe
According to The Africa Report, the meeting was initiated by Fubara himself, though the Presidency has declined to comment on the matter. Multiple attempts to confirm the meeting from official channels were unsuccessful.
A source familiar with the development described it as a significant step, marking the first face-to-face meeting between Tinubu and Fubara since the President declared a state of emergency in the state.
In his national broadcast on March 18, Tinubu cited “months of intense political instability” in Rivers State that had “paralysed governance” and “threatened national stability.” He subsequently appointed former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, as the state’s sole administrator.
Sources said the meeting was focused on defusing the crisis and restoring a functional government in the oil-rich state. Discussions reportedly included the possibility of Fubara’s reinstatement.
Notably absent from the talks was the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—Fubara’s estranged political godfather. Sources say Wike is concerned about the meeting’s potential implications.
