President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday, May 31, inaugurated the first completed segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway — a 30-kilometer stretch from Ahmadu Bello Way to Jakande Estate in Lekki, Lagos

The project, which had been on the drawing board for nearly three decades, is a centerpiece of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The 700-kilometer highway is designed to run through nine coastal states, connecting Lagos to Calabar, and is expected to boost trade, tourism, and regional integration along Nigeria’s southern corridor.
Speaking at the commissioning, Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced during the planning and early construction stages, including route controversies and environmental concerns.

He commended Minister of Works David Umahi and Hitech Construction Company for what he described as a commitment to delivering “durable and sustainable infrastructure.”
“This highway is more than concrete and asphalt — it’s a symbol of national unity and economic renewal,” Tinubu said.
Alongside the Lagos ceremony, the president also virtually commissioned several other infrastructure projects across southern Nigeria. These included the dualisation of the East–West Road from Eleme Junction to Ahoada in Rivers State, the Sagamu–Ibadan section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, and the rehabilitation of the Alesi–Ugep Road in Cross River State.
The inauguration was livestreamed via the Aso Rock Villa’s official YouTube channel, allowing citizens across the country to follow the event in real time.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is expected to play a transformative role in Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape, opening up new economic opportunities and easing mobility for millions.
