Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the recent withdrawal of police officers assigned to Very Important Persons (VIPs)
Tinubu announced the withdrawal on Sunday during a security meeting in Abuja attended by Service Chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services.

The directive instructed police authorities to redeploy these officers to focus on their core duties, with the Special Protection Unit of the Nigeria Police Force ordering all personnel attached to VIPs nationwide to return to their bases.
Speaking on Wednesday as debates on national security resumed in the House of Representatives, Wase expressed concern that bandits could target lawmakers for abduction. He urged the President to clarify the criteria for VIP designation, recalling a time when Boko Haram terrorists were reportedly listed as recruits in the Army and Police Force.
Under the new arrangement, VIPs requiring protection will now have to request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) rather than relying on police officers.
The Presidency explained that the policy aims to strengthen police presence in communities, particularly in remote areas where stations are often understaffed and citizens remain vulnerable to attacks.
