President Donald Trump abruptly announced he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately” and warned that further purges of media outlets he decried as “fake news” would soon follow
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico […] from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump, 80, wrote on Truth Social Friday, Sept. 18.
“Certainly, if there is an attempt to remove journalists from the White House, well, our cameras are rolling. I think viewers will see it happen if it does… attempt to be tried,” CNN chief media analyst Brian Stelter said on air shortly after Trump’s announcement, noting that “there’s no indication that he’s actually followed through.”
In a statement posted to X on Friday, CNN said it “stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting. We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government. Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally-protected right.”
