Former President Donald Trump has commuted the federal prison sentence of Larry Hoover, the 74-year-old founder of the Gangster Disciples, a notorious Chicago street gang

Hoover had been serving six federal life sentences for crimes including drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, and continuing to run a criminal enterprise. These charges were in addition to a separate 150- to 200-year state sentence for a 1973 murder conviction in Illinois.
Though his federal sentence has now been commuted, Hoover remains behind bars due to his ongoing state sentence. He is expected to be transferred from the federal supermax facility in Colorado to a prison in Illinois.

Hoover’s legal team argued for clemency, citing his transformation during nearly three decades in prison, including long periods in solitary confinement. Supporters, including rappers Kanye West and Drake, have publicly advocated for his release in recent years, notably through a benefit concert in 2021.
The commutation has sparked a mix of reactions — welcomed by his supporters and family, but criticized by others due to Hoover’s criminal history. The Trump team has not released specific reasons behind the decision.
