U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited his feud with billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk, threatening to send the Tesla CEO “back to South Africa” and to unleash a revived Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on him
Tensions between the former allies flared up again on Monday after Musk criticized lawmakers who supported Trump’s spending bill. In a post on X, Musk said those who campaigned on cutting government expenditure but still backed the bill “should hang their heads in shame.” He further threatened to launch a new political movement — the America Party — if the bill passes.
Musk, who once led the DOGE initiative aimed at reducing government waste and fraud, had parted ways with Trump’s administration months earlier, souring their once-close relationship.
Responding on Truth Social, Trump blasted Musk, accusing him of benefiting excessively from federal subsidies.
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far. Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote.
He added: “No more rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production — and our country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!”
