Trump warns Iran of total destruction over assassination attempt

United States President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning to Iran, saying any alleged assassination attempt against him by leaders in Tehran would trigger overwhelming retaliation

Speaking on NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich Tonight on Tuesday, Trump said Iran would face total destruction if any attack were carried out against him.

“Well, they shouldn’t be doing it but I’ve left notification, if anything ever happens, we’re going to blow the whole — the whole country’s going to get blown up.”

Trump disclosed that intelligence officials during the Biden administration had briefed him on the alleged threats while he was campaigning in the 2024 presidential election. Former Attorney General Merrick Garland had previously said the plot was linked to retaliation for the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by the U.S. in 2020, during Trump’s first term.

Despite being briefed, Trump criticised former President Joe Biden for not speaking publicly on the issue, saying leaders should stand up for one another when faced with such threats.

“But I have very firm instructions,” Trump said. “Anything happens they’re going to wipe them off the face of this earth.”

Trump reiterated that he had already left standing orders for Iran to be destroyed if an assassination attempt were made against him. He had made similar remarks earlier after signing an executive order shortly after returning to office, granting him broad powers to engage Iran diplomatically while maintaining maximum pressure on Tehran.

“They haven’t done that, and that would be a terrible thing for them to do. Not because of me — if they did that, they would be obliterated. That would be the end. I’ve left instructions, if they do it, they get obliterated. There won’t be anything left. And they shouldn’t be able to do it.”

Trump also warned that military action against Iran remains an option following weeks of anti-government protests in the country, which reportedly led to more than 3,300 d3aths during clashes with security forces. He added that the U.S. could intervene if more protesters were executed, though he noted he had recently been informed that the killings had stopped.
