A top university in China, Renmin University, dismissed a professor on Monday following allegations of sexual harassment made by a graduate student.
The student, Wang Di, who is pursuing her doctoral studies at the School of Liberal Arts, publicly accused her supervisor of misconduct on social media. She shared a lengthy video on Weibo where she detailed instances of physical and verbal abuse by the professor, who had previously held high positions within the university and the Communist Party.
Wang Di claimed that after she rejected his advances, the professor retaliated by assigning her excessive tasks, scolding her, and threatening to obstruct her graduation. She posted audio recordings that she said provided evidence of the harassment, including one where she repeatedly refused his attempts to kiss her.
In her online statement, Wang Di expressed that she could no longer tolerate the situation and demanded justice, urging for the professor’s punishment and the appointment of a new supervisor for her studies. Although she wore a mask in the video to conceal her identity, she showed her university identification card to authenticate her claims.
The university responded swiftly to the allegations by initiating an investigation into the matter. This case has attracted significant attention and support on social media, highlighting broader concerns about sexual harassment and abuse of power within academic institutions in China.
