The United States House Appropriations Committee will on Tuesday lead a joint congressional briefing on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, officials confirmed

Participants will include representatives from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom as well as other experts. The briefing is aimed at highlighting what the organisers describe as “escalating violence and targeted persecution of Christians in Nigeria.”

According to the announcement, the roundtable will gather testimony for a comprehensive report “directed by President Trump on the massacre of Nigerian Christians and the steps Congress can take to support the White House’s efforts to protect vulnerable faith communities worldwide.”

Officials noted that lawmakers will receive key intelligence and assessments on the conditions facing religious minorities. “The roundtable will gather critical testimony to inform a comprehensive report,” the statement said.

The development comes at a time of deepening US–Nigeria security collaboration. President Bola Tinubu recently approved Nigeria’s delegation to the newly formed US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, created to implement security agreements reached during high-level meetings in Washington led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The working group includes senior ministers and security chiefs and is tasked with strengthening counterterrorism operations, intelligence sharing, border management, and coordination on civilian protection and humanitarian issues.

The enhanced cooperation follows heightened concerns over terrorism, bandit attacks, and increasing reports of targeted violence against Christians in Nigeria, drawing intensified attention from US officials.
