In an advisory issued Tuesday, the CBP emphasized that having a green card is a privilege, not a guaranteed right.

“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” the agency stated.
“Our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused.”

The CBP further warned that LPRs with past convictions who present themselves at U.S. ports of entry could face mandatory detention under current laws.

This warning comes as part of an intensified push by immigration authorities to enforce stricter compliance among green card holders amid broader immigration crackdowns.

According to the 2024 Office of Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS), there are approximately 12.8 million lawful permanent residents in the United States.

While the exact number of Nigerian green card holders is not specified, Nigerians consistently rank among the top African recipients.

From 2021 to 2023, Nigeria was the 15th overall and only African country on the list of top 20 nations whose citizens were granted U.S. green cards — with around 40,000 Nigerians receiving LPR status during that period.
