Popular gospel singer Victoria Orenze has warned members of a congregation against using their mobile phones to record a worship session, making it clear that anyone who disobeys her instruction could be sent away.
The singer was unhappy with the habit of people reaching for their phones to capture what was happening instead of giving their full attention to the worship. She urged those present to put their devices away and focus on the moment rather than worrying about recording it.
Orenze stressed that worship should be more than simply capturing videos to keep or share with others. She questioned the point of recording a spiritual moment when a person was not fully engaged in what was happening.
She said:
“Don’t use your phones, I will send you far away from here. You don’t know how to honour God. You don’t know how to respect the Spirit of God.
“Everything is about capturing, and yet you will have nothing inside. You want to capture? Capture in your heart. Drop those phones. Have an encounter with God.
“This generation, we are used to phones. Anything, phone. When you are making love in your room, do you carry phones?
“You are before the Lord. Blind Bartimeus didn’t carry a phone and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David.’ He was sh0uting. The woman with the issue of bl&&d didn’t say, ‘Jesus is passing; let me video him.
“You don’t have issues. If you do, you won’t pick up your phones and make videos.”
