Violent riots erupt in Sunderland amid anti-immigrant protests

Sunderland, a northeast English city, has witnessed violent far-right riots, with several hundred people rampaging through the city center, attacking police, and setting fires

The unrest follows the killing of three children at a dance class earlier in the week, which sparked anti-immigrant protests.

Eight people were arrested, and three officers were hospitalized after facing “serious and sustained levels of violence.” The police chief described the disturbances as “utterly deplorable.”

The riots were fueled by online misinformation attributing the killings to a Muslim immigrant, despite the alleged perpetrator being identified as a 17-year-old Christian born in the UK.

Condemnation has come from authorities, including the police commissioner, who described the violence as “inexcusable criminality.” Counter-protests have emerged, with residents protecting a mosque from far-right thugs.

The UK is bracing for further protests, with rallies planned in over 30 locations.

The government has warned participants in violent unrest to “be prepared to face the full force of the law.”
