The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened over the weekend as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, formally withdrew from all previously reached reconciliation agreements

In a statement personally signed and released on Saturday, May 25, the former Rivers State governor placed the blame for the party’s ongoing turmoil squarely on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. Wike alleged that Makinde had consistently failed to honor agreements, describing him as the “chief culprit” in what he called the party’s breakdown in trust.
Wike also pointed fingers at Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and other PDP leaders, accusing them of serial betrayals, dishonesty, and a lack of commitment to party unity.
Tracing the roots of the discord back to the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, Wike said several efforts had been made to heal internal rifts, including G5 and expanded stakeholder meetings, but those initiatives have now been undermined.
According to Wike, despite reaching a gentleman’s agreement at a series of meetings — including one hosted by former Senate President Bukola Saraki — the terms were soon violated. He claimed that key decisions, such as the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the legitimate National Secretary of the PDP, were ignored.
He further alleged that Makinde and Mbah had orchestrated unauthorized actions, including pushing for alternative leadership, summoning factional meetings, and interfering with preparations for the Anambra governorship race and zonal congresses.
Wike expressed frustration that the trust he had hoped to maintain among party stakeholders had been broken. He also emphasized his longstanding loyalty to the PDP, dating back to 1998, and lamented that those he supported into office had repaid him with betrayal.
“Having done everything to preserve the unity of the party, and given the current situation where agreements are continually breached, I have no choice but to pull out of all reconciliatory understandings,” he said. “I will continue to fight until justice is served.”
The statement marks a new phase in the ongoing PDP crisis, with Wike clearly positioning himself for a prolonged political standoff.
