Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with head coach Gary O’Neil following a poor run of results that left the club struggling in 19th place in the Premier League
The 41-year-old, who took charge in August 2023, departs with Wolves four points adrift of safety after their 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town on Saturday—marking their fourth consecutive league loss and 11th defeat in 16 matches this season.
In a statement on the club’s website, chairman Jeff Shi expressed gratitude for O’Neil’s efforts, saying, “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication, and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”
O’Neil, a former Premier League midfielder with 214 appearances for clubs including Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham, and Norwich, joined Wolves after a brief stint at AFC Bournemouth. In his first season, he guided Wolves to a 14th-place finish, securing notable wins against Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur, and leading them to the FA Cup quarter-finals.
However, Wolves have endured a disastrous 2024/25 campaign. With just nine points and 40 goals conceded in their first 16 matches, this season marks their worst start to a top-flight campaign since 1983/84, a season that ended in relegation. While their early fixtures included tough matches against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, Wolves have struggled even against lower-ranked opposition, losing recent games to Bournemouth, Everton, and Ipswich Town.
The team’s current goal difference of minus-16 is the second-worst in the league, leaving them with a steep challenge to avoid relegation.
