Aiyeobasan Tosin Elijah, widely known as Frettic in the music industry, has expressed concern over the evolving approach to gospel music in Nigeria.
According to Frettic, musicians today prioritize melody over lyrics, a shift from the past when gospel songs were rich with Bible verses.
As the CEO of T-Fretque Productions, Frettic shared his observations on the changing landscape of gospel music. He noted that while artists are now more focused on creating catchy melodies, the depth of meaning in the lyrics has diminished. “Unfortunately, melody has overtaken lyrics,” Frettic stated. “In the past, gospel songs were heavily laced with Bible verses; these days, the melody is what sells more.”
Frettic also pointed out that both the gospel and secular music industries in Nigeria face their own unique challenges and have different ways of measuring success. He explained, “Success is relative. Gospel music is becoming a great pathway leading people to Christ—this is success for the genre, whereas secular music has become more lucrative for its musicians than ever—this is success for that genre as well.”
