The Vatican, led by Pope Francis, has issued a stern caution against gender-altering surgery, asserting that such interventions endanger “the unique dignity” inherent in every person.
The declaration, titled “Dignitas Inifinita” (Infinite Dignity), highlights a spectrum of challenges to human dignity, encompassing poverty, war, and various forms of abuse.
Addressing what it perceives as attempts to obscure the fundamental distinction between genders, the Vatican firmly rejects gender theory and any procedures aimed at altering one’s sex. The document underscores the sanctity of life from conception and emphasizes equal dignity for all individuals, irrespective of circumstances.
While Pope Francis has criticized gender ideology for erasing gender distinctions, he has also extended pastoral support to transgender individuals, demonstrating a nuanced stance. However, the Vatican’s stance on gender theory has faced criticism from some quarters within the LGBTQ+ Catholic community.
In addition to addressing gender-related issues, the Vatican document denounces violations of human dignity across various domains, including the digital sphere, surrogacy, and assisted dying. It opposes the criminalization of homosexuality, stressing that such measures contradict the inherent dignity of individuals.
