The Kwara State High Court has restricted the organizers of the planned nationwide protest to the Metropolitan Square in Ilorin. The protest is set to begin on August 1.
Adesikeola Ajiboye, spokesperson for the Kwara State Ministry of Justice, announced this restriction in a statement on Wednesday. She explained that the court issued the order due to concerns that unrestricted movement of protesters could potentially lead to violence. Presiding Judge Jibril Bio Salihu agreed with the argument presented by Ibrahim Sulyman, the state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice.
In her statement, Ajiboye noted that the court granted the ex parte order to ensure public safety. Judge Salihu, after reviewing the evidence and arguments, issued an interim injunction. This order restrains the protest organizers from holding any activities outside the designated Metropolitan Square/Asa Dam Road area for a period of seven days, starting from August 1, 2024. The judge also mandated that security forces provide adequate protection for the lives, properties, and infrastructure in Kwara State during this period.
Additionally, the court ordered that all legal documents related to this case be served to the respondents by posting them at the High Court of Justice premises. The respondents include the Director of State Security Service, Kwara State; the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command; the Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps; Buhari Olanrewaju Ahmed; the Take-It-Back Movement; and other unidentified individuals.
The judge adjourned the matter to August 14 for further hearings, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order and safety during the protest period.
