The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Olisaka Chibuzo Calistus, a businessman, at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) in Kano State
Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesman, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the suspect, an importer and exporter, was caught on December 15 with 256 wraps of cocaine weighing 6 kilograms.
Babafemi described the seizure as the largest interception of cocaine at the Kano airport since the establishment of the NDLEA MAKIA Command in 2006. The cocaine was discovered during an inward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 941 from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Olisaka was found to have concealed hundreds of cocaine pellets in his body.
In a separate operation, the NDLEA thwarted an attempt by Olanrewaju Bada Akorede, an ex-convict, to export Rohypnol to South Africa. The illicit consignment was hidden in a cargo containing gari, shoes, men’s singlets, and other items at the export shed of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
Olanrewaju, who had been convicted for a similar offense in December 2023, previously attempted to ship 4.90 kilograms of tramadol and 2.10 kilograms of Rohypnol to South Africa. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment or a fine of N900,000, which he paid before resuming criminal activities.
Additionally, Cynthia Akaeen, an Italy-based businesswoman, was arrested on December 18 at MMIA while attempting to board a Royal Air Maroc flight to Italy via Addis Ababa. NDLEA officers intercepted her at the departure terminal and recovered 9,190 tramadol tablets weighing 6 kilograms. Cynthia admitted she was promised €1,000 for successfully delivering the drugs in Italy.
Babafemi commended NDLEA officers for their vigilance and reiterated the agency’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking in the country.
