Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has denied claims that he worked with the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, stating categorically that he neither knew nor met the former dictator during his time in power

Obi made the clarification on Sunday Politics, a Channels TV programme, while reacting to recent allegations by former presidential aide Reno Omokri, who accused him of having ties to the Abacha regime.
Setting the record straight, the former Anambra State Governor explained that his only interaction with the government at the time was in relation to a port congestion crisis affecting businesses nationwide.
“There was a time during Abacha’s government when they announced that all ports were closed, which led to serious congestion. Goods weren’t being cleared or exported, and it was hurting our economy,” Obi said.
He added that a group of concerned business leaders, including himself, sought an audience with the Minister of Finance and were eventually granted a meeting with both the minister and Abacha.
“The president directed the Finance Minister to involve some of us in forming a committee to help decongest the ports. That was it. After two or three weeks, they dissolved the committee and moved to reorganize the ports.”
Obi further explained that some people later suggested he become part of a reform panel due to his public comments about the inefficiencies of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
“I’ve said it before—Nigeria’s port authority is the only one I know that has offices outside its country of operation. But beyond that, I was never part of the Abacha regime. I never met him. I don’t know him. Everything I’ve done in my life is in the public domain.”
