The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has arrive Lagos, Nigeria for his first official visit to Africa since assuming office—a visit aimed at strengthening ties between London and major African cities
Khan is leading a delegation of 26 UK unicorn companies—startups each valued at over $1 billion—in a bid to explore new business opportunities and boost investment partnerships with Nigerian firms.
While in Lagos, Khan commended the city’s rich cultural heritage and innovative spirit, describing both Lagos and London as “global powerhouses of creativity and innovation.” During a tour of the famous Nike Art Gallery, he highlighted the importance of such institutions in preserving Nigeria’s cultural identity and supporting young talents in the creative sector.
The mayor emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between Lagos and London, especially in the areas of technology, arts, and commerce, stressing that partnerships between the two cities could help drive shared growth and innovation.
On a more solemn note, Khan also offered his condolences following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. He described Buhari’s passing as a great loss and extended sympathies to his family and the Nigerian people.
Buhari died at The London Clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a long illness. His body was flown back to Nigeria and laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
