Nafiu Bala declares self as ADC National Chairman

The leadership tussle within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) escalated on Wednesday after Nafiu Bala, the party’s Deputy National Chairman, announced that he has assumed office as the authentic National Chairman

Speaking at a press briefing to mark his resumption, Bala insisted that both the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution make him the rightful successor following the resignation of former chairman Ralph Nwosu.

Nwosu stepped down months ago after the opposition coalition adopted the ADC, leading to the appointment of David Mark as interim chairman. But Bala rejected that move, accusing coalition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of hijacking the party.

“Our former national chairman voluntarily resigned his position. The party’s constitution is very clear on the transfer of power when this happens. As far as we are concerned, both the Electoral Act and our constitution state that the deputy national chairman takes over,” Bala said.

He maintained that no legitimate change of leadership has occurred and declared himself the “authentic National Chairman” of the ADC.

In a slip of the tongue, Bala mistakenly referred to the party as the African Democratic Congress, APC, while reaffirming his takeover.
