Protesters demanding the release of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, dispersed in panic on Monday after security forces reportedly fired live bullets to disperse them near the Presidential Villa in Abuja
The demonstration, led by #RevolutionNow convener and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, began as early as 6:50 a.m. around the Ministry of Women Affairs headquarters.

According to Daily Trust, security operatives from the Nigerian Police Force, Guards Brigade, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had been deployed since Sunday, mounting heavy security around key government institutions including the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Court of Appeal, and Force Headquarters.
Before the incident, the protesters had vowed to march to the Presidential Villa to demand Kanu’s release. However, tensions escalated when, as the group led by Sowore approached the Court of Appeal area, security operatives reportedly opened fire.

Earlier, Sowore and others had been heard urging the police to remain peaceful, saying, “Don’t teargas us! Don’t teargas us! Respect the rule of law! We have the right to protest, we’re Nigerians.”
