Saudi Arabia has declared Wednesday, February 18, as the first day of Ramadan 2026 after the crescent moon was sighted
The announcement was confirmed by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), which reported that the moon was successfully observed by the official sighting committee
Several other countries, including Qatar, have also fixed Wednesday as the beginning of the holy month.
During Ramadan, Muslims devote themselves to worship and spiritual reflection. Mosques witness large gatherings each evening for the isha prayer followed by extended Taraweeh prayers, which are performed exclusively during the fasting month.

The period also encourages increased acts of charity, with many believers supporting the less privileged through donations and community outreach.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and one of the pillars of Islam, requires Muslims to fast daily from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and smoking.
The holy month also draws large numbers of worshippers to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage to Mecca, which can be undertaken at any time of the year. However, many choose Ramadan for Umrah, believing it carries greater spiritual rewards.
Countries across the world, including the United States and Canada, often look to Saudi Arabia’s official declaration to determine when Muslims within their borders will commence the observance of Ramadan.
