Nollywood actress Remilekun Oshodi, better known as Remi Surutu, has spoken about the harsh criticism she received online after the de.ath of her daughter, saying some people targeted her because she openly supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 election campaign.

The actress shared the experience on Sunday at the unveiling of EKO57, a Lagos-based political support group created in support of the president.

In a video from the event that later surfaced online, Surutu recalled how social media users insulted and mocked her during the campaign period, with some even blaming Tinubu for her daughter’s de.ath because of her political loyalty.

“I am not scared. I’ve been campaigning for so many years. People bashed me on the internet during campaign time,” she said.

“They insulted me and said, a day to the election, that it was Asiwaju I was following who killed my child. But I care less.”

Despite the backlash, Surutu said she did not allow the criticism to stop her from participating in the election, stressing that voting remains a personal right.

“I still went on the second day to vote. Your vote is your right. Don’t let anybody deceive you,” she said.

She also defended Tinubu’s performance, saying critics often fail to understand how difficult it is to govern a country like Nigeria.

“When I met B Tinubu, our Baba, he was doing well. If you think he has not done well, bring a man from your family and let him govern for just one day,” she said.

The actress insisted that the attacks she faced online would not stop her from supporting the president.

“I am not backing out. I will campaign for him and I will vote for him. He has my vote,” she declared.

Surutu lost her first daughter, Ayomikun Elizabeth Oladayo, in July 2017 after complications linked to sickle cell disease. She had previously spoken publicly about the tragedy and how she found the strength to cope with the loss.
