The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, has stepped down from his role in the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to an announcement from the State House media office on Tuesday evening
His resignation came just hours before the March 31, 2026 deadline given to political appointees with electoral ambitions to leave office.

Alkali, an indigene of Gombe State, confirmed his decision after a meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He is now expected to join the race for the Gombe State governorship in the 2027 elections, aiming to succeed the current governor, Inuwa Yahaya, whose tenure ends in May 2027. Yahaya first assumed office in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress.
Alkali’s exit follows an earlier directive issued on March 17, 2026 by the president through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, mandating all political appointees seeking elective positions to resign on or before March 31.
