The United States has begun enforcing visa restrictions against certain Nigerians accused of breaching religious freedom, marking a stronger response from Washington over reported cases of persecution

The policy, now actively in effect, was confirmed by Mark Walker, who said it is no longer just a declaration but already being implemented.

In a statement released on Friday, he stressed that those linked to religious persecution would face strict consequences.

“We have already executed on this policy, and we will continue to subject perpetrators to additional scrutiny. If you engage in persecution, you are not welcome in America. The United States is safer when we keep those responsible for religious persecution from entering our homeland.”

The restriction framework was initially introduced in December 2025 by Marco Rubio. It gives the U.S. State Department authority to deny visas to individuals connected—directly or indirectly—to violations of religious freedom, including those who plan, support, finance, or carry out such acts. In some instances, immediate family members may also be affected.

Rubio had described the policy as a decisive reaction to ongoing “atrocities and violence against Christians” in Nigeria, highlighting attacks allegedly linked to extremist factions and armed groups, particularly in the northern and Middle Belt regions.
