Investigative journalist Kemi Olunloyo has drawn attention online after making claims about the source of high-value virtual gifts sent to Nigerian TikTok livestreamers.

Speaking in a recent commentary, she questioned how some creators on the platform receive unusually large gifts during live sessions, suggesting that the system may not be as straightforward as it appears.

“There’s a phenomenon in Nigeria where when someone goes live on TikTok and they get gifts. Those gifts could be coins, animals, lions, money gun… It’s these gifts that streamers depend on. At the end of the day, why are some streamers getting huge gifts on TikTok? Who are the people gifting them? Are they real or are they just fake.”

Olunloyo went on to allege that some of the virtual gifts may be linked to fraudulent activity, claiming that stolen credit cards could be used to fund transactions on the platform.
“They are real gifts and they come from fraudsters. These fraudsters steal credit cards and use them for gifts on social media…”

She also mentioned several popular Nigerian livestreamers in her remarks, suggesting that high-profile accounts receive significant support through gifting, while questioning the identity of those behind the transactions.

“Carter Efe, Peller and every other streamer in Nigeria get big gifts. So who are these guys giving them the big gifts? And why them?”

Olunloyo further suggested that the issue could attract attention from international authorities if linked to financial fraud.

“By the end of the year FBI might pick up Peller and all the gifters.”

As of now, no official findings  have confirmed any connection between TikTok virtual gifting and fraudulent credit card activity in Nigeria.
