“24/7 electricity Isn’t a luxury” — Regha slams Adeyanju over his comment

Social commentator Daniel Regha has taken a swipe at activist-lawyer Deji Adeyanju, sparking fresh debate around electricity access and affordability in Nigeria.

Reacting to Adeyanju’s remarks about electricity usage patterns which he earlier stated;

“Nigerians don’t need 24/7 electricity; most people just need light from around 8pm to 7am for basic comfort,” a statement that has since generated widespread criticism online, with many arguing that it ignores the heavy dependence of businesses and industries on constant electricity supply.

Regha didn’t hold back. He argued that the issue goes far beyond just having power at night, stressing that many Nigerians depend on electricity throughout the day to sustain their livelihoods.

“Deji Adeyanju is proof that some youths are no different from our present leaders. What a rubb’sh argument,” Regha said. “Nigerians need 24/7 electricity 100%, and will be able to afford it if the govt made affordability possible.”

He went on to question the logic of limiting electricity expectations to nighttime use, pointing out the impact on businesses and the broader economy.

“He’s talking about people needing light from 8pm to 7am for basic comfort, what about those who rely on electricity heavily to run their businesses?” he added.

Regha also linked the country’s high cost of goods to unreliable power supply, noting that production expenses continue to rise due to energy challenges. According to him, stable electricity is not a privilege but a fundamental public service.

“A lot of products including food items are overly expensive due to high production cost, and electricity contributes to it. In a serious country, electricity won’t be divided into bands and won’t be luxury, provision of light is a social amenity,” he stated.

Taking things a step further, Regha also questioned Adeyanju’s professional standing, saying:

“This is coming from a supposed laywer, but no surprises; Someone that couldn’t even bail his client in times of trouble.”

The exchange has since stirred conversations online, with many Nigerians weighing in on the ongoing challenges of power supply and the expectations from both leaders and outspoken public figures.
