Human rights lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, who serves as counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has triggered debate after alleging that the Nigerian Constitution shows religious imbalance in its wording and structure
In a post shared on X on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Ejimakor argued that contrary to popular belief, the constitution is not truly secular, claiming it places more emphasis on Islam-related terms while excluding Christianity entirely.

He wrote: “Do you know that you’ve been lied to that the Nigerian Constitution is a secular Constitution.”
He further added: “Well, it’s not, because it contains 73 mentions of SHARIA, 28 mentions of Islam & 10 mentions of Muslim but ZERO mention of CHRISTIAN. Is this not enough to want a separate State? Let’s talk about it, without fear or favor,”
Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution maintains that no level of government should adopt any religion as a state religion, with Section 10 clearly stating that “The Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State Religion.”
