Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed confidence that the city continues to shelter a vast pool of undiscovered creative talent capable of reaching the global heights already achieved by some of Nigeria’s biggest music exports.
Speaking during an appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, the governor described Lagos as a thriving hub for entertainment and innovation, powered by a restless and inventive population.
He pointed to the global success stories already emerging from the state’s music scene, referencing top Afrobeats figures such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, while insisting that many more talents remain hidden in plain sight.
According to Babajide Sanwo-Olu:
“You know Burna Boy, you know Wizkid, you know Davido, I tell you, there are a thousand other Burna Boys and Wizkids somewhere waiting to be discovered. And they are there in Lagos.
Throughout the conversation, he reflected on Lagos’ growing footprint in the global creative economy, noting that despite persistent infrastructure and funding constraints, the city continues to produce internationally competitive artists, filmmakers, designers, and digital creators.
He also described what he called the “kàndù sp¡rit” of Lagosians, framing it as a blend of resilience, survival instinct, and creativity that keeps the city’s cultural engine constantly moving forward.
The discussion also touched on the struggles young creatives face, particularly around financing, infrastructure gaps, and limited access to structured opportunities, even as Lagos remains one of Africa’s most influential cultural centers.
The governor has continued to support entertainment-focused initiatives through state backed programmes and partnerships aimed at strengthening the creative industry.
