Pope Leo XIV, the current head of the Catholic Church, has issued a strong warning about artificial intelligence in his first major Vatican document released on Monday.
Pope Leo XIV expressed concern that companies and governments are developing and using artificial intelligence faster than laws and regulations can keep up.
He drew a comparison between today’s technological progress and the Biblical “Tower of Babel,” suggesting that humanity may be building complex systems without fully understanding their direction or consequences. He warned that this could end in harm rather than benefit.
On military use, he stressed that artificial intelligence should never be left unchecked in warfare, saying it must be bound by “the most rigorous ethical restraints” when used for military purposes.
He also pointed to the broader cultural impact of AI, warning that human dignity could slowly erode if societies begin valuing efficiency, speed, and profit more than people themselves.
Rather than concentrated control, he called for wider accountability, stronger legal systems, and independent oversight to ensure that major technology companies do not hold excessive influence over such powerful tools.
Across his statements, he consistently frames artificial intelligence as a major test for humanity, urging careful and responsible development as the technology continues to advance.
