JTON Music has reacted to public discussions and allegations surrounding its ongoing legal battle involving the company, Joy Tongo, and singer, Qing Madi, distancing itself from what it described as misleading narratives about the case.
The controversy intensified after Qing Madi’s “Barely Legal” EP was taken down from streaming platforms shortly after its release, prompting reactions from the artiste on social media.
In a statement released, the company clarified that the legal dispute was initiated by the singer herself, adding that its actions were taken strictly within legal boundaries to safeguard its investment, contractual rights, and efforts in developing her career.
JTON stressed that the matter should not be interpreted as harassment or intimidation, but rather a commercial disagreement centred on rights, obligations, and ownership of creative work.
“It is a legal and commercial dispute concerning rights, obligations, investment, and the protection of works and opportunities developed during the course of a professional relationship,” the statement read.
The company also rejected claims that it had threatened the artiste in any form, insisting that neither it nor its representatives authorised any actions that could be interpreted as intimidation or harm.
It further addressed the recent High Court ruling in Lagos State, stating that the decision had been misrepresented online. According to JTON, the court did not rule against its case but granted part of its interlocutory injunction, restraining the artiste from releasing or performing content produced or financed under the label pending the final determination of the suit.
The firm added that its agreements with international partners, including Sony Music and Bu Vision, remain legally binding and must be respected by all parties involved, noting that materials produced under those arrangements cannot be commercially exploited outside approved structures.
Reiterating its position, JTON said its priority is to ensure compliance with existing contractual obligations while allowing the court process to run its course.
The company also called on the public, media, and fans to avoid spreading unverified claims and to allow the legal proceedings to continue without interference.
“JTON’S position is simply to ensure that all parties respect existing obligations.
“JTON remains committed to due process. All actions taken so far, and all actions to be taken going forward, will be within the confines of the law and under the supervision of the Court in Nigeria and in New York,” the organisation said.
