Frederick Leonard’s legal representative has offered a direct response regarding the ongoing divorce matter involving the actor and his estranged wife, Nollywood actress Peggy Ovire, addressing issues around court appearances, customary marriage procedures, and claims surrounding the separation.
Barrister Rita Amy, said to be representing Frederick Leonard, spoke on the conduct of both parties during the divorce process and raised questions about how the case has been handled in court so far. Her comments focused on representation, procedural steps, and customary expectations tied to marriage dissolution.
According to her, Frederick Leonard appeared in court through his lawyer, while Peggy Ovire was present without legal representation. She suggested this raised concerns about the approach to the case and the seriousness of the proceedings from both sides.
“Peggy, when Frederick’s lawyer came to court, where was your lawyer? Nowhere to be found. You appeared in court without a lawyer. Why, though, if I may ask? You do not want the divorce. See, tell yourself the truth,” she said.
She further explained that under customary marriage practice, the return of bride price is often part of the process when a marriage is being dissolved. In her account, she noted that Frederick Leonard had requested the return of the bride price through Peggy’s family, describing it as a standard cultural step.
“Frederick asked your father to return the bride price. It is very customary. It is very legal. But you said no, come to the court to collect the bride price. There is no court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria that would force a man to stay married where he does not want to marry,” she added.
