Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton has passed away at the age of 79
Born in Los Angeles, Keaton rose to international fame in the 1970s for her portrayal of Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather films.

Her charm, wit, and distinctive style made her one of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring figures.
Her breakout role came in Annie Hall (1977), directed by Woody Allen, which earned her the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Actress. The film cemented her status as a leading actress and a cultural icon.
Keaton’s illustrious career spanned over five decades and included memorable performances in Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, The Family Stone, Something’s Gotta Give, Marvin’s Room, and Reds. She was nominated for three additional Oscars, all in the Best Actress category.

Her longtime friend and producer Dori Rath confirmed her death to CBS News.
Beyond acting, Keaton made her mark as a director. Her 1987 documentary Heaven explored people’s beliefs about the afterlife, while her 1995 film Unstrung Heroes—selected for Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section—earned critical praise. She also directed Hanging Up (2000), starring alongside Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow.
Keaton’s final film role was in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, in which she appeared with Eugene Levy and Kathy Bates.
Known for her quirky fashion sense—often featuring tailored suits and wide-brimmed hats—Keaton became a symbol of individuality and elegance.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world. Steve Martin, her Father of the Bride co-star, shared a memory of their playful friendship, recalling an interview where Keaton jokingly told Martin Short, “I mean, you’re both idiots.” Martin wrote, “It sums up our delightful relationship with Diane.”
Actor Ben Stiller also paid homage on X, describing her as “one of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”
Though she never married, Keaton adopted two children, Dexter and Duke, who were her greatest joy. In her 2011 autobiography Then Again, she wrote, “I am totally content whenever the ones I love are happy about something little, big, insignificant, whatever. I just don’t think anyone could possibly have the same wonderful, intense, compelling feelings that I have for this family of mine.”
