During a podcast, Nigerian music executive Obi Asika opened up about the hurdles artists face in the industry, using Burna Boy’s story as a powerful example of perseverance against the odds

Asika pointed out how Burna Boy, now an internationally acclaimed superstar worth millions, was once overlooked and blocked by key players in the Nigerian music scene simply because he wasn’t from Lagos.
“This same Burna Boy that’s a million dollars plus today — they’d be blocking him. He wasn’t from Lagos; he’s from Port Harcourt. The guy went, bypassed everybody and exploded. Can’t be blocked anymore, can he? That’s the beautiful thing about this — people try to do all kinds of things, but you have to actually track,” Asika said.
Reacting to the video in the comment section, Burna Boy confirmed Asika’s take but suggested the story runs even deeper.
“This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me. They are even still trying their best lol. But all they did was create this unquenchable FIRE that will continue to burn them for eternity,” Burna Boy wrote.
The exchange sheds light on the internal struggles many artists face while trying to break into the mainstream. Burna Boy’s journey from Port Harcourt to global stardom serves as a testament to his resilience, and a reminder that true talent often has to fight to be seen.
