Aminan Rahman, a 47-year-old chef, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for strangling his 24-year-old wife, Suma Begum, in front of their children and her TikTok lover.
The incident occurred on April 29, 2023, in Docklands, east London.
Rahman used Begum’s scarf to strangle her while video calling her boyfriend, Shahin Miah, 24, and said, “Because of you this happened.” He then stuffed Begum’s body into a suitcase and threw it into the River Lea as their young son watched.
Miah testified in court, recalling the horrifying video call where he saw Rahman grab Begum’s throat. “She wanted to run away and he then grabbed her throat,” Miah said through an interpreter. He heard three screams before the video froze. In a second video call that night, Rahman told Miah, “Look, I have killed her [Ms Begum] and now you get ready.”
Begum’s body was found 10 days later by the side of the Thames River.
Rahman and Begum had married in 2019 through an arranged Islamic ceremony over the phone while she was in Bangladesh. Begum later met Miah on social media in 2021 and began an online relationship. Miah continued the relationship even after learning about her marriage.
Begum’s half-brother, Abdul Amin, described how Begum changed after moving to the UK, becoming withdrawn and losing weight. He said she had wanted to tell them about Rahman’s abuse but was threatened with death if she did. He questioned Rahman’s claims of loving his children, stating, “He had deprived them of the childhood they should have had.”
Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC told jurors that Begum was unhappy in her marriage and openly in a relationship with another man, wanting to leave Rahman. The prosecution argued that Rahman’s actions were driven by rage, shame, jealousy, or cultural pressures.
The judge, Mr. Justice Bennathan, sentenced Rahman to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years, describing Begum as “a lively, attractive young woman and a devoted mother” who dreamed of a new life with a man her own age. He condemned Rahman for killing Begum in front of their child and disposing of her body in the Thames.
