A 55-year-old babysitter, Maria Santiago, is facing several charges after a toddler fell out of a moving SUV and was hit by a car in Clinton, Connecticut, according to state police.
The arrest warrant reveals that Santiago was responsible for watching several children, but does not specify her relationship to the 2-year-old involved in the incident. The toddler’s parents declined to be interviewed by police.
At the time of the incident, three other children, aged 9, 4, and 2, were left at home alone with chicken boiling on the stove, according to the arrest warrant.
The toddler was injured in May on Sunnybrook Lane after opening the SUV door while Santiago was driving quickly around a curve. The tire was still on the child’s legs when neighbors came to help, and the child sustained serious injuries.
A witness reported that the toddler often got out of his car seat and stood up in the backseat, according to a police report. Santiago was driving to pick up another child when the accident occurred.
Santiago turned herself in on Monday, July 29, following the issuance of a warrant for her arrest. She has been charged with four counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count of failure to apply a child restraint system. She has been released on a written promise to appear in court, with the case continued to August 26.
