The Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, over alleged contempt of court
The arrest order was issued just hours after Yakubu officially vacated his position as INEC chairman.

The directive followed a suit filed by the Action Alliance (AA) against INEC and its former chairman for allegedly failing to comply with a court judgment delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in case number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.
In that ruling, the court ordered INEC to upload the names of the party’s National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on its official portal. The court had also affirmed the legitimacy of the party’s elective convention held on October 7, 2023, which produced Omoaje as national chairman, noting that the exercise was duly supervised by INEC officials in line with the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
However, despite INEC’s claim of compliance, the Action Alliance maintained that the commission failed to fully obey the judgment, as Omoaje’s name was still missing from the commission’s website. The court expressed displeasure over the partial compliance, noting that while other NEC and state chairmen’s names had been uploaded, Omoaje’s had not.
In a fresh order dated October 7, 2025, and signed by O.M. Kilani on behalf of the Court Registrar, the judge directed the police to arrest and charge Yakubu for contempt within seven days.
The court also awarded a cost of ₦100,000 against the judgment creditors.
