Leading opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, have convened at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja to present their stance on the newly amended Electoral Act

The gathering at the Lagos/Osun Hall also features prominent political personalities such as former Senate President David Mark, New Nigeria Peoples Party chieftain Buba Galadima, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and the African Democratic Congress National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola.

Other notable attendees include ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.

The opposition leaders are expected to brief journalists on disputed provisions of the Electoral Act, alongside other pressing national issues.

Under the 2022 Electoral Act, political parties could nominate candidates through direct primaries involving all registered members, indirect primaries by delegates, or by consensus arrangements among party leaders. The 2026 Electoral Act, however, now limits nominations to direct primaries and consensus selections only.

The new law also shortens campaign periods and primary timelines, while the release of funds to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will now occur six months before elections, down from the previous 12-month schedule.
