The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new support program for technical college students across the country, offering a monthly stipend of N45,000

This initiative seeks to boost enrollment and interest in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as an attractive alternative to conventional university education.
According to Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the stipend is part of a wider effort to rejuvenate the TVET sector. Alongside the monthly allowance, the program will cover tuition fees, provide payments to industry supervisors during students’ practical attachments, and finance certification expenses.
The government has set aside N120 billion for this initiative, which will be managed through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Notably, the N45,000 monthly support is a grant, so students are not required to repay it.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education is working on legislation to create a National Skills Fund under the Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). This bill, soon to be presented to the National Assembly, aims to secure long-term funding for TVET institutions in both public and private sectors.
This move marks a major milestone in enhancing technical education in Nigeria, empowering students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving workforce.
