Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence with herdsmen, warning that treating them as adversaries could worsen the country’s security situation
In a video circulating widely on social media, Gumi stressed that herdsmen are an integral part of Nigerian society and should be seen as neighbours, not enemies. He cautioned that any hostility toward them could be exploited by actors with malicious intent to destabilize communities.

Gumi highlighted that tensions between herders and local communities, if left unresolved, could be manipulated by both internal and external forces that thrive on conflict. He urged Nigerians to prioritize harmony, noting that peaceful coexistence is essential for national unity and security.
He said:
“Herdsmen are going nowhere. They are part of us, and we are part of them. We must learn to live together. They’re our neighbours, so we should never allow them to be our enemies. If by any mistake we turn them into enemies, then we’re finished, because our real enemies will use them against us.”
