Singer Khalid has responded to accusations made by his ex-boyfriend, rapper Hugo Almonte, following his recent coming out as gay.
The 26-year-old artist denied claims of abusive behavior, instead alleging that Almonte was the abusive partner during their relationship.
In a video shared on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), Khalid clarified that he and Almonte had broken up “four years ago,” contradicting earlier reports of a recent split.
He also rejected accusations of drug use, saying, “I’ve never done cocaine a day in my life,” and dismissed claims of paying for escorts, stating, “I’ve never paid for sex a day in my life, ever.”
The allegations surfaced after Almonte’s cryptic statement to ‘Rolling Stone’, where he accused an unnamed ex of trying to “silence” him after their breakup.
While Almonte did not mention Khalid directly, fans speculated the comments were about the “Young Dumb & Broke” singer.
Khalid explained his decision to speak out, saying the comments on Almonte’s posts were “triggering” and that he felt compelled to defend his reputation. “It’s frustrating seeing people paint me as some manipulative abuser,” he said.
He added that he avoids drama, saying, “This is why I stay out of the way. I don’t like this.” Khalid ended the video by expressing hope for the controversy to pass.
The statements come shortly after Khalid officially came out on social media, posting a pride flag emoji alongside the caption: “There y’all go. Next topic, please lol.”
