The family of late veteran Nollywood actor and theatre icon Kola Oyewo, has announced plans for his final burial, which will take place on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Osun State
Kola Oyewo passed away at the age of 80 after a distinguished career that spanned acting, theatre education and traditional leadership. He was widely respected as one of Nigeria’s leading theatre practitioners, an Associate Professor of Drama, and the Balogun of Oba-Ile in Osun State.
In a statement, the Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House, Oba-Ile, described the late actor as a cherished father, grandfather, traditional ruler and a veteran whose impact on Nigerian theatre will endure for generations.
According to the funeral programme released by the Balogun Oyekola Oyewo Memorial Committee, the three-day burial rites will begin on Wednesday, August 5, with a wake-keep and service of songs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Igboya, Ile-Ife.
A commendation mass will follow on Thursday, August 6, at the same church, while an artistes’ night featuring tributes and cultural performances will hold later that day at Oduduwa Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
The family also announced that an exhibition showcasing Kola Oyewo’s photographs and works will open at the Pit Theatre, African Studies Building, Obafemi Awolowo University, on Thursday and continue through Friday.
The final burial activities on Friday will begin with the funeral cortege departing the late actor’s residence at Ese Ola’s Compound, Oba-Ile, before a requiem mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oba-Ile, where family, friends, colleagues and admirers will bid him a final farewell.
