Reno Omokri has thrown his weight behind First Lady Oluremi Tinubu following the backlash over her advice encouraging Nigerians to consider small businesses like selling roasted corn, akara and kuli-kuli.
Rather than argue his point with statistics alone, Omokri shared a photo of himself buying roasted corn on a street in Istanbul, Turkey, saying roadside food vending is common there and provides a livelihood for millions of people.
“Bought Roadside Corn In Istanbul. 7 Million People Sell Roadside Street Food In Turkey. That’s 20% of Their Workforce. Fact-check Me. Having Your Own Roadside Food Business Is Far Better Than Joblessness!” he wrote.
His post came after the First Lady faced criticism for encouraging Nigerians, especially women and young people, to embrace small-scale businesses as a way of earning an income
Omokri clearly doesn’t share that view. For him, there is dignity in starting small, and he believes earning a living from selling food by the roadside is nothing to be ashamed of if it puts money on the table.
By pointing to Turkey, he noted that street food businesses are a normal part of the economy in many countries and employ millions of people.
