LASTMA nabs member of notorious One-Chance syndicate in Lagos

A member of a notorious “One-Chance” syndicate operating a yellow-painted commercial bus has been arrested by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)

The arrest occurred near the Conoil Filling Station along Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere, Lagos, following a distress call from Miss Bibian Emelifonwu, a victim of the syndicate’s operation while en route to work.

Emelifonwu recounted boarding the bus, registered as KSF 56 XL, and sitting next to a man holding a nylon bag in the front seat. Under the guise of opening the door beside her, the man leaned on her and stole her phone from her bag before she was forcibly ejected from the moving vehicle onto the highway.

A vigilant LASTMA team overseeing traffic witnessed the incident and gave chase, apprehending the driver, Toyib Ogunjobi, while his accomplices—a conductor and another passenger—fled the scene.

During interrogation, Ogunjobi admitted to leading a three-member syndicate, including the bus owner.

He revealed their tactics involved luring passengers with low fares on the Costain-Ojota route, stealing their belongings, and ejecting them from the vehicle while in motion.

He claimed they made between ₦250,000 and ₦300,000 daily by selling stolen phones and valuables.

Seven stolen phones, including models like Techno Pop, Samsung AZZ, Intel A623, Techno Spark, and others, were recovered from Ogunjobi. He also implicated the vehicle’s owner in the criminal operation.
