Academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have come to a halt following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s staff unions
The strike, which began on Thursday, was triggered by unresolved issues between the unions and the university management. It was jointly declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), under the Joint Action Committee.
In a letter dated July 31, 2025, and addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the unions formally notified the university of their decision to down tools. The notice was signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare and Sylvester O. Idowu; SSANU-LASU Chairman and Secretary, Oluwaseyi Lawal and Waheed Majekodunmi, respectively.
The unions instructed all staff members across LASU’s campuses—including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, and the LASU Epe campus—to immediately withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions… we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University,” the statement read.
“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of Staff Members are met by the appropriate authorities.”
The industrial action comes just days before students were scheduled to begin their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session on Monday.
