Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat to Peter Mutharika in the country’s presidential election
Chakwera made the announcement in a national broadcast on Wednesday and also placed a call to congratulate Mutharika.

“It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the constitution,” Chakwera said.
According to results from 24 out of 36 districts, Chakwera secured over 700,000 votes, while Mutharika received 2,000,000. The national election commission has yet to release results from the remaining 12 districts.
Mutharika, 85, previously served as Malawi’s president from May 2014 to June 2020.
Chakwera’s move has drawn comparisons to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who in 2015 called then-opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari to concede even before the final tally was released, a decision that was widely praised for reducing political tension.
