Lionel Messi is set to feature in his sixth FIFA World Cup after being included in Argentina’s squad for the 2026 tournament, where the defending champions will attempt to retain their crown.
The 38-year-old captain guided Argentina national football team to World Cup glory in Qatar after defeating France national football team on penalties in the 2022 final.

His selection in Lionel Scaloni’s 26-man squad means he will now become one of the few male players to appear in six editions of the tournament.
Messi currently holds the record for the most World Cup appearances by any player with 26 matches and will join Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching the six-World-Cup milestone.
Argentina will open their Group J campaign in Kansas City against Algeria before facing Austria and Jordan in Dallas.
Messi was recently substituted during Inter Miami CF’s latest MLS match, though the club later confirmed he was only dealing with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring and had not suffered an injury.
The forward has earned 198 caps for Argentina and could reach 200 appearances during upcoming friendly matches against Honduras and Iceland before the World Cup begins.
